About Puerto de Navacerrada

Navacerrada is where skiing in Madrid began. The first clubs were coming up to this pass in the early twentieth century, long before there was a lift, and the resort that grew here shaped generations of Spanish skiers.

It is small now, and has had a complicated recent history with the national park it sits inside. What it retains is the history, the setting on the pass and a scale that suits a first day far better than it suits a full week.

Where lessons start

A short, manageable mountain for a first contact with snow, an hour from Madrid. Check what is actually open before travelling: the resort's operating footprint has changed in recent years.

Getting there

About an hour from Madrid, and unusually for a Spanish resort there is a railway station at the pass on the Cercanías line from Cercedilla.

Qualifications required in Spain

Teaching skiing or snowboarding for payment in Spain is a regulated profession: an instructor must hold the Técnico Deportivo en Deportes de Invierno (TD1/TD2/TD3). Instructors listed as certified on Alpine Pal have either sent theirs to us for review or are vouched for by the ski school that invited them.

Puerto de Navacerrada: common questions

Can you get to Puerto de Navacerrada by train?

In principle yes, and it is rare for a Spanish resort: the Cercanías line from Cercedilla has a station right at the pass, so from Madrid it is a train with one change. The line has spent long spells closed for works, so check it is running before planning around it. And check what is actually open at the resort too: its operating footprint has changed in recent years.
