Q: How do I get to Roccaraso from Rome or Naples?

By road, Rome is around two hours and Naples about two and a half, Pescara an hour and a half. Without a car there are seasonal coach services from both cities, and Roccaraso has a station on a slow, scenic mountain railway from Sulmona that runs mainly as a tourist service — check timetables rather than counting on it. The snowmaking is extensive enough that the season is reliable from December to March.

Roccaraso is the largest ski area in the Apennines and by some margin the busiest: the Alto Sangro plateau in Abruzzo draws skiers from Rome, Naples and the whole of southern Italy, and on a February weekend it feels it.

The scale is genuine — over 100 km of pistes linking Roccaraso, Rivisondoli and Pescocostanzo — and the snowmaking is extensive enough to make the season reliable.
