About Serre Chevalier
Serre Chevalier runs for 13 km along a valley in the Hautes-Alpes, linking four main villages and around 250 km of pistes, with Briançon — the highest town in France and a UNESCO-listed Vauban fortress — at one end.
It is the quiet value alternative to the Tarentaise. It gets more sunshine than the Savoie resorts, it is meaningfully cheaper, the villages are old stone rather than concrete, and most of the skiing is below the treeline, which makes it one of the better places to be in the Alps when the weather turns.

Where lessons start
Each of the villages — Chantemerle, Villeneuve, Monêtier — has its own beginner area, so learn where you sleep. Monêtier is the quietest and the highest, and has hot springs at the bottom of the hill, which after a first day on skis is not a trivial argument.
Getting there
Turin is about two hours through the Fréjus tunnel and is often the cheapest way in; Grenoble and Marseille are around three. There is also a night train from Paris to Briançon, which is the closest thing France has to a sleeper ski service.
Qualifications required in France
Teaching skiing or snowboarding for payment in France is a regulated profession: an instructor must hold the Professional card (diplôme d'État de ski). Instructors listed as certified on Alpine Pal have either sent theirs to us for review or are vouched for by the ski school that invited them.

Is Serre Chevalier a good choice when the weather is bad?
One of the best in the Alps. Most of the roughly 250 km of pistes sit below the treeline, so when the cloud comes down you still have definition and shelter, which the high, bald Tarentaise resorts cannot offer. It also gets more sunshine than the Savoie resorts.
Which Serre Chevalier village should I stay in for lessons?
