Tignes is the other half of the Espace Killy, and the more functional half: purpose-built at 2,100 m around a lake, with the Grande Motte glacier above it running to 3,450 m. It opens early, closes very late, and in some years skis through the summer.

There are effectively no trees, which is the standard high-altitude trade: superb snow, and a flat white void when the cloud comes down. What Tignes has that Val d'Isère does not is gentler terrain right at village level — the area around Le Lac is genuinely good for learning, which makes the pairing useful for a mixed group.

Tignes Le Lac and Le Lavachet have the beginner slopes, right by the accommodation, so a first lesson does not start with a lift. Val Claret is higher and closer to the glacier, better once you can ski. On a flat-light day ask your instructor to work the pitches near the village, where the piste markers give you something to read.

Getting there

Geneva or Lyon in three to four hours, or train to Bourg-Saint-Maurice and a 40-minute bus — one of the better rail-served resorts in the Tarentaise.

Qualifications required in France

Teaching skiing or snowboarding for payment in France is a regulated profession: an instructor must hold the Professional card (diplôme d'État de ski). Instructors listed as certified on Alpine Pal have either sent theirs to us for review or are vouched for by the ski school that invited them.
