About Valle Nevado

Chile has a geographical advantage no other ski country can match: you can land in Santiago in the morning and be on a chairlift by lunchtime. Valle Nevado is the largest and most developed of the Tres Valles resorts that make that possible, barely an hour up a switchback road from the capital.

It sits above 3,000 m in terrain that is entirely above the treeline — huge open bowls, dry Andean snow and a well-earned reputation for spring corn snow in September. It links on one ticket with El Colorado and La Parva, which together form the largest ski area in South America by lift-served terrain.

The base is a purpose-built cluster of hotels rather than a village. You come for the mountain and the access.

Where lessons start

The learning area is at the base and works well, but the thing to tell your instructor is when you arrived. Coming up from sea level the same morning leaves many people short of breath and tired far faster than they expect, and a good instructor paces the first lesson around that rather than pretending it is not happening.

Getting there

Santiago is about an hour to ninety minutes by road — the closest big ski resort to a capital city anywhere. The access road has a long series of hairpins and is often restricted or requires chains after a storm, so a big snowfall can mean a late start. The season runs mid-June to late September or early October, with August the most reliable month.

Qualifications required in Chile

Chile has no state teaching licence. The professional standard is the Instructor certification, and Alpine Pal shows what each instructor actually holds so you can judge it for yourself.

Valle Nevado: common questions

Is altitude a problem at Valle Nevado?

It can be. The base sits above 3,000 m and lifts reach beyond 3,600 m, high enough that arriving from sea level the same morning leaves some people breathless and tired faster than they expect. Take the first day gently, drink more water than feels necessary, and tell your instructor — they plan around it constantly.
