About Białka Tatrzańska

Białka Tatrzańska grew from a village on the Białka river into one of the biggest ski areas in Poland. Three separately built hills — Kotelnica Białczańska, Kaniówka and Bania — now share one lift pass and about 21 km of pistes, with fast six-seat chairs on Kotelnica and the Tatras filling the view to the south.

The terrain is wide, short and overwhelmingly easy: around four-fifths of it is graded easy, with a vertical of only about 230 m. That is exactly why it is so popular with families and first-timers, and why it is packed in the winter school holidays. Night skiing keeps the main slopes running into the evening, and Terma Bania, a thermal pool complex at the foot of the Bania slope, is where many people end the day.

Where lessons start

One of the best places in Poland to learn. Bania has a dedicated children's area and the gentlest slopes; Kaniówka is quieter and good for practising before the busier Kotelnica; Kotelnica has the longest runs and the fast chairs for when turns are linked. Book midweek if you can: weekends and the winter school holidays are crowded.

Getting there

Kraków is about two hours by road via Nowy Targ, and Zakopane about half an hour. There is no railway in the valley: the nearest stations are Zakopane and Nowy Targ, with buses on to Białka.

Qualifications required in Poland

Poland has no state teaching licence. The professional standard is the SITN PZN instructor card (SITS for snowboard), and Alpine Pal shows what each instructor actually holds so you can judge it for yourself.

Białka Tatrzańska: common questions

Is Białka Tatrzańska good for beginners?

Yes — it is built for them. About four-fifths of the 21 km is easy, the slopes are wide and groomed, and Bania has a children's area. The catch is crowds: during the ferie, the winter school holidays that run region by region from mid-January to the end of February, and at weekends, the queues on Kotelnica are long, so a midweek or evening lesson is calmer.

Does one pass cover all of Białka?

Yes. Kotelnica, Kaniówka and Bania share a pass, and Białka is also part of Tatry Super Ski, a regional pass that covers other resorts in Podhale and over the border in Slovakia.
