About Korbielów

Korbielów is a small village at the head of a valley in the Żywiec Beskids, and its ski area climbs the flank of Pilsko (1,557 m), the second-highest peak of the range after Babia Góra, on the Slovak border. The lifts run from around 700 m in the village to nearly 1,500 m, which gives Pilsko one of the biggest verticals in Poland, close to 800 m.

The area is old-fashioned in places — mostly drag lifts and a couple of chairs — but the terrain is real mountain skiing by Polish standards: long blue and red runs through the forest down from the open Hala Miziowa meadow, where the PTTK mountain hut stands, and exposed slopes above the treeline. The height means the snow usually lasts longer than in the lower Beskid resorts.

Where lessons start

Beginners start on the gentle slopes and short lifts by the village, including a children's lift; the chairlift up to Hala Miziowa opens the long runs once turns are linked. Above the meadow the terrain is open and windy — keep it for a clear day.

Getting there

Katowice and Kraków are each about two hours by road. The nearest town with a railway station is Żywiec, about 30 km away.

Qualifications required in Poland

Poland has no state teaching licence. The professional standard is the SITN PZN instructor card (SITS for snowboard), and Alpine Pal shows what each instructor actually holds so you can judge it for yourself.

Korbielów: common questions

Why ski Pilsko rather than Szczyrk?

For the height. Pilsko's lifts climb to nearly 1,500 m, against 1,257 m at Szczyrk, which gives close to 800 m of vertical and snow that usually lasts longer. Szczyrk has the newer lifts and far more kilometres; Korbielów feels more like a mountain and less like a resort.
