About Krynica-Zdrój

Krynica-Zdrój is one of Poland's best-known spa towns, a place of mineral springs, wooden villas and a long promenade in the Beskid Sądecki, close to the Slovak border, and in winter the main ski base of the range.

The big mountain is Jaworzyna Krynicka (1,114 m). A gondola from the Czarny Potok valley, opened in 1997, climbs about 470 m to the summit, and the area adds chairlifts, a string of drag lifts and runs of up to 2.6 km, which the operator counts among the longest floodlit pistes in Poland. Closer to town, Słotwiny Arena is a compact, modern hill of mostly easy runs with a viewing tower at the top, and Henryk is a small area with two chairs right among the hotels.

Where lessons start

Henryk and Słotwiny Arena are the places to start: gentle, groomed and close to town. Jaworzyna's long runs from the summit are the next step, and the top can be cold and windy. Jaworzyna belongs to the PKL group, which allows teaching on its slopes only with its written consent, so let your instructor choose where to meet.

Getting there

Kraków is about two and a half to three hours by road via Nowy Sącz, the nearest city, about 35 km away. Krynica has a railway station, though trains from Kraków are slow.

Qualifications required in Poland

Poland has no state teaching licence. The professional standard is the SITN PZN instructor card (SITS for snowboard), and Alpine Pal shows what each instructor actually holds so you can judge it for yourself.

Krynica-Zdrój: common questions

Which ski area in Krynica is best for beginners?

Słotwiny Arena or Henryk. Both are close to town and mostly easy, and Słotwiny's runs are wide and sheltered. Jaworzyna Krynicka, reached by gondola from Czarny Potok, has the long runs and the height, and is the natural progression once you can ski a blue run from top to bottom.
