About Zakopane
Zakopane is Poland's winter capital, a town of wooden Podhale houses at the foot of the Tatras, the only truly alpine range in the country. It hosted the 1939 World Championships, holds a ski-jumping World Cup on the Wielka Krokiew most winters, and on a January weekend half the country seems to be here.
The serious skiing is on Kasprowy Wierch. A cable car from Kuźnice, first opened in 1936, climbs to just below the 1,987 m summit, the highest lift-served point in Poland, and two chairlifts serve the bowls on either side, Goryczkowa and Gąsienicowa. The mountain lies inside the Tatra National Park, so there is no snowmaking: the runs open only on natural snow, and strong wind regularly stops the lifts.
Everything else is low, groomed and floodlit. Polana Szymoszkowa, on the Gubałówka ridge, has a covered six-seat chair and a long, gentle run; Harenda, on the northern edge of town, is short and a little steeper. These are where most lessons happen.

Where lessons start
Learn on Polana Szymoszkowa or Harenda: both are snowmade, groomed and lit in the evening, and Szymoszkowa has a children's area with a conveyor belt. Kasprowy Wierch is not a place for a first day — its pistes are steep, above the treeline and on natural snow only. PKL, which runs Kasprowy, allows teaching on its slopes only with its written consent, so agree the meeting point with your instructor before you buy a pass.

Getting there
Kraków is about two hours by road on the Zakopianka, which jams on winter weekends, and the fastest trains from Kraków take about two hours, with through trains from Warsaw. Kraków airport is the natural arrival point. For Kasprowy, buses and minibuses run from the centre up to Kuźnice.
Qualifications required in Poland
Poland has no state teaching licence. The professional standard is the SITN PZN instructor card (SITS for snowboard), and Alpine Pal shows what each instructor actually holds so you can judge it for yourself.
Find instructors in PolandZakopane: common questions
Can beginners ski on Kasprowy Wierch?
Not on a first day. Kasprowy's runs are steep, above the treeline and on natural snow only, and the cable car also carries sightseers, so queues build. Learn on Polana Szymoszkowa or Harenda, which are snowmade and floodlit, and keep Kasprowy for when red runs feel comfortable — ideally on a clear, calm day.
Why is Kasprowy Wierch so often closed?
Because it sits inside the Tatra National Park, where the pistes cannot be snowmade: they open only once enough natural snow has fallen, often later than the hills around town. On top of that, strong wind regularly stops the cable car and chairlifts. Check the operator's status on the morning of a lesson and keep Szymoszkowa or Harenda as plan B.
