About Cardrona Alpine Resort
Cardrona sits on the road between Wanaka and Queenstown and does two things better than anywhere else in New Zealand: freestyle and learning to ski.
The terrain parks are the best in the country and a serious international training venue — Olympic and X Games athletes from the Northern Hemisphere spend their off-season here. At the other end of the mountain, the beginner slopes are the gentlest of the Southern Lakes fields, wide and consistently pitched, with a dedicated learning area away from the traffic.
Like almost all New Zealand skiing, it is above the bushline — no trees, enormous open terrain, spectacular views and absolutely nowhere to hide when the weather closes in.

Where lessons start
The dedicated learning area is properly separated from the rest of the mountain, which is not true everywhere in New Zealand. Ask your instructor about the wind: the fields here close for it far more often than European resorts do, and knowing which face is sheltered that morning is a large part of what a local knows.

Getting there
Queenstown airport is about an hour and Wanaka around 35 minutes. The access road is a long unsealed climb with switchbacks; chains are frequently required and 2WD vehicles are sometimes turned back. The season runs mid-June to early October.
Qualifications required in New Zealand
New Zealand has no state teaching licence. The professional standard is the Instructor certification, and Alpine Pal shows what each instructor actually holds so you can judge it for yourself.

Why do New Zealand ski areas close so often?
Wind, mostly. The ski areas are above the treeline on exposed terrain in a country sitting in the path of the Roaring Forties, and the lifts stop when it blows too hard. Rain at altitude and road access after heavy snow also close fields. It is normal, locals plan around it, and it is a strong argument for booking more than one day.
