The season then runs into October. Early season is exactly when it makes sense to book a lesson here rather than at the Queenstown fields.

Q: Is the Mt Hutt access road really that bad?

It is steep, unsealed and exposed, and famous for it — but thousands drive it every winter. The field closes for the road and for the wind, so check both before setting off from Methven, the usual base at the foot of the road, or from Christchurch, around an hour and a half away. Otherwise it is a long drive up for nothing.

Mt Hutt is the highest ski area in the South Island and, in a good year, the first in New Zealand to open — sometimes in late May. It rises straight off the Canterbury Plains above Methven, which means the view from the pistes takes in farmland stretching to the Pacific.

It is a full commercial field with chairlifts and a proper base, and the terrain is genuinely varied. The access road is famous: steep, unsealed and exposed.
