Q: How do I get to Caviahue, and what should I check first?

Neuquén is around five hours by road and Chos Malal is the nearest town of any size, so this is a destination rather than a day trip. Before setting off, check that the resort is open: the slopes are on the flank of the still-active Copahue volcano, and volcanic activity can affect access. Once there, the araucaria forest makes it far more comfortable in flat light than the open Andean bowls, and the thermal springs next door are the obvious end to the day.

Caviahue is the only resort in Argentina where you ski through araucaria forest — the monkey puzzle trees that are sacred to the Mapuche and can live over a thousand years. The slopes are on the flank of the Copahue volcano, still active.

The neighbouring village of Copahue has thermal springs fed by the same volcanic system, which after a cold day is the obvious plan.
