About Cerro Castor

Cerro Castor, just outside Ushuaia in Tierra del Fuego, is the southernmost ski resort in the world. Its latitude gives it something no other Argentine resort has: consistently cold, dry snow through a long season, on terrain that runs almost down to sea level.

It is a small mountain rather than a big one — around 30 km of pistes — but the conditions are the most reliable in the country, which is why national teams from the Northern Hemisphere use it for pre-season training. The skiing runs through lenga forest with the Beagle Channel below.

Ushuaia itself, the southernmost city in the world, is the other half of the trip.

Where lessons start

The compact size and consistent snow make it a good place to learn, and it is far less busy than Bariloche in July. The one thing to plan for is daylight: this far south the winter days are short, so lessons cluster in the middle of the day.

Cerro Castor: common questions

When is the season at Cerro Castor?

Roughly June to October, and it is the most reliable in Argentina: the latitude keeps the snow cold and dry through the whole season, which is why Northern Hemisphere national teams train here. The catch is daylight — this far south the winter days are short, so lessons cluster in the middle of the day. July is the busiest month; September is quieter and still snowy.

How far is Cerro Castor from Ushuaia?

26 km, about half an hour by road — the closest of any Argentine resort to its airport. Ushuaia airport has direct flights from Buenos Aires of around three and a half hours. Most visitors stay in the city and drive or take a shuttle up each morning, so agree a meeting point with your instructor rather than assuming a village at the base.
