About Châtel

Châtel is at the top of the Abondance valley, on the Swiss border, and it is still visibly a farming village — the Abondance cow and its cheese are from here, and the chalets are working buildings rather than second homes.

It is part of the Portes du Soleil, with the Swiss resorts of Morgins and Torgon a lift away, so a day here can cross a border twice without a passport check.

Châtel: common questions

Can I ski into Switzerland from Châtel?

Yes. The Swiss resorts of Morgins and Torgon are a lift away, all on the Portes du Soleil pass, so a day here can cross the border twice without a passport check. Keep an eye on the time for the lifts back across.

Is Châtel good for beginners?

Yes, and quieter and cheaper than Morzine or Avoriaz. The terrain at village level is friendly, and the whole Portes du Soleil is there to grow into. It is still visibly a farming village at the top of the Abondance valley, about an hour and a half from Geneva.
