Les Gets is part of the Portes du Soleil, the vast cross-border area linking twelve resorts across France and Switzerland, but it does not feel like part of anything vast: it is a working Savoyard village with a church, a school and cows in the summer, at a modest 1,172 m.

That low altitude is its weakness in a warm winter and its strength the rest of the time: the skiing is through trees, which is easier on the eyes and the nerves than a high, bald bowl, and the terrain is gentle and generous. It is one of the standard recommendations for a first family ski holiday in France, and it earns it.

Where lessons start

The village-level nursery slopes are right in the middle of things, and the greens on the Chavannes side are long, wide and forgiving. Because the resort is small and walkable, a lesson does not begin with twenty minutes of logistics — which with children is the difference between a good morning and a bad one.

Getting there

Geneva is about an hour and a quarter — one of the shortest transfers to any French resort, which makes Les Gets unusually practical for a short break.

Qualifications required in France

Teaching skiing or snowboarding for payment in France is a regulated profession: an instructor must hold the Professional card (diplôme d'État de ski). Instructors listed as certified on Alpine Pal have either sent theirs to us for review or are vouched for by the ski school that invited them.

Is Les Gets too low for reliable snow?

It can be, at village level, in a warm winter — the resort tops out around 2,000 m and the base is at 1,172 m. Snowmaking covers the main runs and the Portes du Soleil pass lets you move to higher linked sectors like Avoriaz when the bottom is thin. For January and February it is rarely a problem; for late season, ask before booking.
