About Cogne

Cogne sits in the Gran Paradiso national park, the oldest in Italy, and it is a different proposition from the rest of the Aosta valley: a quiet stone village on a broad meadow, with one of the best cross-country networks in the Alps running across it.

The alpine slopes are small and gentle. The Lillaz ice falls nearby are among the best-known ice climbing venues in Europe.

Where lessons start

The obvious place in the Aosta valley to learn cross-country, on trails that regularly host international races, with gentle alpine slopes for anyone who wants both.

Getting there

Turin is around two hours; Aosta is 30 minutes down the valley.

Qualifications required in Italy

Teaching skiing or snowboarding for payment in Italy is a regulated profession: an instructor must hold the Maestro di sci, registered in the regional albo. Instructors listed as certified on Alpine Pal have either sent theirs to us for review or are vouched for by the ski school that invited them.

Cogne: common questions

Is Cogne a good place to learn cross-country skiing?

The obvious one in the Aosta valley. The trails run across the broad meadow in front of the village inside the Gran Paradiso national park, with easy loops for a first lesson and enough network to keep an experienced skier busy for a week — it regularly hosts international races. The alpine slopes are small and gentle, fine for a child's first turns but not a destination in themselves. Aosta is 30 minutes down the valley.
