About Craigieburn Valley
Craigieburn is the club field other club fields are measured against: rope tows, no grooming at all, steep chutes and basins, and a lodge where guests are expected to help with the dishes.
You clip onto the moving rope with a metal nutcracker on a harness, which is a skill in itself and takes most people a day to stop dreading. What you get for the effort is some of the best terrain in the country with nobody on it.

Where lessons start
Not a beginner mountain, in any sense. Even confident skiers benefit from an instructor here: the nutcracker takes teaching, and the terrain is ungroomed, avalanche-prone and unforgiving.

How do the rope tows at Craigieburn work?
You wear a harness with a metal nutcracker and clip it onto the moving rope, which drags you uphill — a skill in itself that takes most people a day to stop dreading, and one an instructor genuinely teaches. There is no grooming at all, and the terrain is steep and avalanche-prone, so this is not a beginner mountain in any sense. Christchurch is around an hour and a half, on a steep unsealed track that needs chains or four-wheel drive.
