Font-Romeu sits on the Cerdagne plateau, one of the sunniest inhabited places in France, and it has been a national altitude-training centre since the 1968 Olympics — French athletes across many sports still train here.
All that sun means the resort depends on the most extensive snowmaking system in the Pyrenees, which it has built precisely because the climate demands it.

Where lessons start
Reliable prepared snow and a lot of sunshine, which for a first week is a good combination. Also one of the biggest nordic areas in the Pyrenees.
Getting there
Perpignan is around an hour and a half, Toulouse about three. The Train Jaune, the historic yellow narrow-gauge railway, runs through the Cerdagne below.
Qualifications required in France
Teaching skiing or snowboarding for payment in France is a regulated profession: an instructor must hold the Professional card (diplôme d'État de ski). Instructors listed as certified on Alpine Pal have either sent theirs to us for review or are vouched for by the ski school that invited them.
