Q: Is Livigno really cheaper because it is duty-free?

Livigno is an oddity: a high valley at 1,800 m near the Swiss border that has been duty-free since Napoleon, which means fuel, alcohol and equipment are noticeably cheaper than the rest of Italy and the main street is lined with shops.

The skiing is on two facing sides of a long valley, Mottolino and Carosello, both above 1,800 m and both cold — Livigno is one of the chilliest inhabited places in Italy, which is exactly why its snow lasts. The Mottolino snowpark is the best in the country and a regular training base for freestyle teams.

The valley floor is broad, flat and traffic-free at the edges, which makes it unusually good for cross-country and for children finding their feet.

Where lessons start

Both sides have beginner areas, and the flat valley floor between them is where a lot of first steps actually happen. Carosello is the sunnier side and usually the more comfortable for a first morning; Mottolino is where the park and the freestyle coaching are.

Getting there

It is genuinely remote. Milan Malpensa is around four hours, Innsbruck about three and a half via Switzerland. The road through the Munt la Schera tunnel from Switzerland is tolled and single-file with alternating direction; the Foscagno pass from Italy can close in a storm. Allow more time than the map suggests.

Qualifications required in Italy

Teaching skiing or snowboarding for payment in Italy is a regulated profession: an instructor must hold the Maestro di sci, registered in the regional albo. Instructors listed as certified on Alpine Pal have either sent theirs to us for review or are vouched for by the ski school that invited them.
