Q: Do I need a guide for the Canalone at Madesimo?

It is on the piste map, but it is not a normal piste: the Canalone is a steep natural gully that only opens when the snow allows and skis very differently from a groomed black. Go with an instructor or guide who knows when it is actually in condition and how to ski it — that local judgement is the main reason to book someone here. The rest of the mountain has good beginner terrain, so the group does not have to split.

Madesimo sits near the Spluga pass on the Swiss border, in a corner of Lombardy that catches a lot of snow, and its reputation rests on one run: the Canalone, a steep natural gully that is among the best-known descents in Italy.

The rest of the mountain is broad and varied, and the whole place is far less busy than the Valtellina resorts to the east.

Teaching skiing or snowboarding for payment in Italy is a regulated profession: an instructor must hold the Maestro di sci, registered in the regional albo.
