It is the nearest snow to Venice, Treviso and Pordenone, around an hour and a half from Venice, and it is set up for exactly that. The terrain is gentle and the snowmaking extensive — it was the first resort in Italy to install it, back in the 1970s — so a booked lesson rarely falls through for lack of snow. On a clear day you can see the Adriatic from the pistes.

Piancavallo sits on a balcony above the Friuli plain, and on a clear day you can see the Adriatic from the pistes. It was the first resort in Italy to install artificial snowmaking, in the 1970s, which given its modest altitude was less a luxury than a condition of existing.

Teaching skiing or snowboarding for payment in Italy is a regulated profession: an instructor must hold the Maestro di sci, registered in the regional albo.
