About Tarvisio

Tarvisio sits where Italy, Austria and Slovenia meet, in the Julian Alps, and the town has the mixed character that comes with that — three languages on the signs and a market that has drawn all three countries for decades.

The Di Prampero descent from Monte Lussari is one of the longest in the eastern Alps, and the mountain-top sanctuary of Lussari is reachable by cable car.

Where lessons start

Good varied terrain and a long descent to work towards. Also one of the largest cross-country networks in Italy, in the forest around the town.

Getting there

Villach in Austria is around 40 minutes, Ljubljana about an hour and a half, Venice around two and a half.

Qualifications required in Italy

Teaching skiing or snowboarding for payment in Italy is a regulated profession: an instructor must hold the Maestro di sci, registered in the regional albo. Instructors listed as certified on Alpine Pal have either sent theirs to us for review or are vouched for by the ski school that invited them.

Tarvisio: common questions

Is Tarvisio easier to reach from Austria or from Italy?

From Austria, by some margin: Villach is around 40 minutes and Klagenfurt airport not much further, while Ljubljana is about an hour and a half and Venice around two and a half. Tarvisio also has a railway station on the Udine–Villach line, so it works without a car. Once there, the Di Prampero descent from Monte Lussari is the run to build towards, and the forest around the town holds one of the largest cross-country networks in Italy.
