About La Plagne
La Plagne is eleven villages spread across a huge, rolling, high-altitude bowl, joined to Les Arcs by the Vanoise Express double-decker cable car to form Paradiski — around 425 km of pistes on one ticket.
It is the resort most consistently recommended for beginners and families in France, and deservedly: the terrain is broad and gentle, the green runs are plentiful and go somewhere, and the lift system does not force a novice onto something steep to get home. That same gentleness is why strong skiers sometimes find it bland — which is what the Les Arcs half of the pass is for.

Where lessons start
Almost every village has its own nursery area, so the sensible plan is to learn wherever you are staying rather than travel. Belle Plagne and Plagne Centre are the most convenient for a family, with ski-in ski-out accommodation and long greens straight off the doorstep.
Getting there
Chambéry, Lyon or Geneva, two to three and a half hours, or train to Aime-la-Plagne or Bourg-Saint-Maurice and a bus. The road up is well maintained but long.
Qualifications required in France
Teaching skiing or snowboarding for payment in France is a regulated profession: an instructor must hold the Professional card (diplôme d'État de ski). Instructors listed as certified on Alpine Pal have either sent theirs to us for review or are vouched for by the ski school that invited them.
Find instructors in FranceLa Plagne: common questions
La Plagne or Les Arcs for a first ski holiday?
La Plagne, fairly clearly. Its beginner terrain is gentler and there is more of it, and the villages put you on snow without a commute. Les Arcs is the better mountain once you can ski confidently, and the Paradiski pass means you can cross over when you are ready.
