Taupō is around an hour and a half and Auckland about four and a half by road. The ski area is inside Tongariro National Park, a dual UNESCO World Heritage site, on the northern flank of Mt Ruapehu; Tūroa is the other half of the mountain, above Ohakune on the south-western side. The season runs through the Southern Hemisphere winter, roughly June to October.

Whakapapa is the largest ski area in New Zealand, on the northern flank of Mt Ruapehu — an active volcano with a crater lake, in Tongariro National Park, the fourth national park established anywhere in the world and a dual UNESCO World Heritage site for both its landscape and its Māori cultural significance.

The terrain is enormous, volcanic and treeless, and the resort operates under a volcanic alert system.
